Wild Basin Speakers Series- Austin

While working at Texas Parks and Wildlife, Jennifer delved deep into the research as to why people are more disconnected than ever from our natural world. What she discovered set her on a mission to reconnect children and adults with nearby nature. Both her books celebrate the birds of Texas that can be found in unexpected places. Her own love of nature can trace its roots back to the juniper breaks and limestone hills of the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. With the Spring migration starting in just a few weeks, it's a perfect time to come learn about the birds and so much more.

Travis Audubon- Speakers Seriers

Travis Audubon Austin, Texas

About the Presentation (by Jennifer Bristol): While conducting research about the connection between nature and people, I kept hearing the same remarks “nature is a faraway place” or “I never know what to do when I get to a park.” I wanted to change that mindset and offer people opportunities to have rich experiences in nature that were welcoming, meaningful and easy. Birding is an experience that gives people a purpose to be in the outdoors and as it turns out is beneficial to our mental and physical health. So, I decided to write a series of books to help people discover the wonders of birding and reconnect with the local outdoor spaces. Parking Lot Birding focuses on parks, nature centers and other local birding spots, while Cemetery Birdingfocuses on – well – cemeteries. While doing the research for both books, I traveled to over 430 parks, nature centers, wastewater settling ponds, sanctuaries, highway rest stops, historic sites, and cemeteries to find the perfect combination of habitat, interesting places, and accessible, easy spaces to immerse in nature. Join me for a chat about what I discovered along the way as I endeavored to dispel the myth that nature is some faraway place.
